View on the lecturers workload

Research on time use of UAS lecturers

Header image
Would you like more insight into how you use your time? A clear understanding of how you can organise your work in a better way? And, play a part in reducing the heavy workload at UAS? Then please take the time to participate in this time use research for lecturers.

What are we asking you?

We are asking lecturers currently working at four Universities of AS to fill out a survey about their time use. We are not only interested in the five-day working week, but we are also asking about all work activities from Monday through Sunday. Good to know: Participation is anonymous!

What's in it for you?

  • An objective insight into your own time use
  • A better understanding of the options you have
    to manage your workload
  • A plan on how to tackle the heavy workload at a
    organisation level

Which Universities of AS are participating?

  • BUas
  • Hanzehogeschool
  • NHL Stenden
  • Saxion

What does participation entail?

  • We ask you to fill out a survey from March 27th to April 10th
It takes about 5 minutes to fill in. During this survey, you will be asked, amongst other things, about the hours you have registered for different tasks. It is useful to have your registered hours and your annual workplan at hand while filling out the survey.
    To the survey
  • To be able to fill in the survey optimally, it helps to monitor your hours for two weeks
We ask you to monitor and register your working hours from Monday 14 March to Sunday 27 March. This will take a view minutes per day. We have a format available in Excel for this. This file contains twelve different tasks that teachers can perform. This is purely for personal use. You don't have to share it afterwards. You can of course also choose to take the information about your time use from your agenda or to use a different format.
    Download the format

Participation is anonymous

Participation is voluntary and anonymous. Researchers and your University do not have acces to your personal data.

Why this second measurement?

We carried out a first measurement in November and December of 2021. Unfortunately, the response was too low to provide a complete view on the workload and time use of lecturers. We therefore sincerely hope that many lecturers will be willing to participate and complete the survey this time.
Did you participate last time? Then you don't have to participate again and we thank you for your contribution!

What happens with the results?

The results will be shared with the participating Universities of Applied Sciences in the form of a factsheet in the spring of 2022. Depending on the results, participating UAS can take further actions in tackling the workload at an organizational level.

Would you like to know more?

This research into time use by lecturers is part of a broader research into UAS lecturers’ workload. The research has been commissioned by the collective labour agreement parties of Universities of UAS and is carried out by Zestor, the labour market and education fund of Universities of Applied Sciences, in collaboration with the Professorship Research Group ‘Organisational Design and Change’ of Hanze UAS.
